Descriptive Narrative

The Empire State Medical Association is the New York affiliate of The National Medical Association NMA which promotes the collective interests of physicians and patients of African descent. We carry out this mission by serving as the collective voice of physicians of African descent and a leading force for parity in medicine, elimination of health disparities and promotion of optimal health.

The Association is made of the local New York Affiliates of the National Medical Association which include:

“Conceived in no spirit of racial exclusiveness, fostering no ethnic antagonism, but born of the exigencies of the American environment, the Empire State Medical Society has for its object the banding together of mutual cooperation and helpfulness, the men and women of African descent who are legally and honorably engaged in the practice of the cognate professions of medicine, surgery, pharmacy and dentistry.”

Vision Statement

The Empire Medical society will be an ever present force in medical science, medical education, medical practice and finance. It will be an efficient well-run organization that is strong in numbers, fiscally healthy, stable and technologically prepared to meet the opportunities and challenges of this new century.

Mission Statement

The Empire State Medical Society promotes the collective interests of physicians and patients of African descent. We carry out this mission by serving as the collective voice of physicians of African descent and a leading force for parity in medicine, elimination of health disparities and promotion of optimal health.

The organization’s focus will include, health policy advocacy, elimination of health disparities, maximizing excellent health outcomes, health education, research and clinical trials, physicians continuing medical education, health professions student mentoring and recruiting, cultural competency and health literacy.

We at the Empire State Medical Society and NMA give great importance to the reduction of health inequality. Reducing health inequalities, improving health status, enhancing the responsiveness of the health system to the legitimate expectations of the population, and protecting people in a fair manner from the financial consequences of caring for health are our main goals.
